Building a clearer path from market discovery to qualified prospects.

Leadbay had a product story, but the bigger challenge was understanding exactly where content could create demand. The work began with ICP research, moved into positioning and problem-first content strategy, and developed into a system for connecting customer problems with discoverable search opportunities.
The Problem
Selling B2B data is easy when buyers already know what they want. It is significantly harder when prospects are struggling with market discovery itself.
Leadbay had developed strong platform mechanics for lead intelligence. However, early marketing relied on generic value propositions: "higher quality contacts," "faster export," and "verified emails." In a market dominated by legacy enterprise directories and automated scrapers, this positioning pushed the product into a commodity race to the bottom.
The Research
Before drafting editorial pillars, we audited qualitative customer queries, alternative comparison reviews, and search habits around sales prospecting.
ICP Assumptions vs. Reality
Founders assumed sales development reps were the primary champions. Interviews revealed growth marketers needing verified lists for multi-touch tests were adopting faster.
Search Intent & Language
Buyers did not query "B2B database tools." They queried tactical friction: "how to find accounts hiring engineering leads" or "enriching localized SMBs."
Existing Alternatives
Competitors gated pricing behind enterprise annual commitments. Leadbay had speed, transparency, and niche filtration agility.
Jobs-To-Be-Done (JTBD)
"Help me isolate 50 high-probability accounts this afternoon without training a team or paying $15,000 upfront."

The Strategy
Instead of attempting broad brand awareness, the strategy rested on building a connected cascade: connecting business goals directly to high-intent customer problems.
Move from commodity list-pulling to strategic pipeline discovery.
The actionable discovery engine for high-velocity teams.
Outbound leads, technical founders, and B2B growth experimenters.
High bounce rates and generic targeting that burns domain reputation.
Tactical, bottom-up guides dissecting verified account discovery.
Programmatic search teardowns, cold outreach breakdowns on LinkedIn.
Organic discovery volume, trial conversions from problem-led guides.
The Content System
The content system was divided into specific functional buckets, preventing content from being produced in isolation.
Problem-First Articles
Articles tackling precise hurdles: data decay, title normalization, and list hygiene before launching outbound campaigns.
SEO & Intent Clusters
Topic clusters built around intent modifier keywords, structuring educational value ahead of platform mentions.
Positioning & Teardowns
Comparing legacy data brokers versus agile prospecting systems, establishing why modern agility beats stale databases.

What we're testing.
Because this is an active experimental strategy, results are not treated as foregone conclusions. The experiment is structured around four distinct hypotheses:
Search Intent Precision
Testing whether long-tail queries centered on data verification yield 3x higher registration intent than top-of-funnel list-building queries.
ICP Segmentation Resonance
Testing whether technical growth engineers convert faster when messaging highlights API flexibility over UI dashboards.
Educational Lead Demand
Evaluating if giving away entire outbound list verification workflows builds higher brand trust and shorter buying cycles.
Distribution Compounding
Monitoring if community-shared technical tear-downs generate durable referral loops across outbound sales operators.
What I Learned
A few takeaways and honest observations from building the strategy:
“When your product operates in a crowded category, describing features is invisible. Describing the customer’s internal friction is authority.”
- Resist feature checklists: Potential customers rarely care about 50 filters until they are confident the first 3 will solve their immediate account-identification headache.
- ICP definitions are iterative: What looks clean on a pitch deck often frays when you inspect who is actually completing self-serve signups.
- Documentation forces clarity: Framing content as reproducible processes rather than generic blog posts naturally eliminates fluff and establishes genuine credibility.
